About the Products
What's inside a Destination Dinner Kit? Glad you asked! We used to call our kits Recipe Kits because each one includes pre-measured amounts of hard to find ingredients but it is more than that. The kits also include a 8 - 12 page "travel guide" filled with beautiful imagery, cultural and historic information, fun trivia about the destination and of course the step-by-step instructions for making the entree. What is unique about Destination Dinners' Kits? Over six years ago we created the concept of using beautiful food kits to share the cultures of the world. We select only recipes that are authentic dishes from each individual country and use only top quality ingredients from each of those countries to ensure the flavor is as close to being there as possible. Additionally we applied the Japanese custom of gifting to the packaging so that whether it was for yourself or another, it was beautiful to the eye in addition to tasty once made. Are Dinner Kits good for children? The kits are great for kids! Not only are they easy enough to encourage children as young as 3 or 4 to help cook by dumping the pre-measured ingredients into the bags or blenders, they're also a great teaching tool for explaining about other places and cultures kids don't have in their day-to-day world. We encourage going full out while using a Dinner Kit with kids: authentic table setting, eating with the right utensils, dressing up, playing music from that country for ambiance and even checking out your local library or the internet for books and pictures to help bring the experience alive. If you need suggestions or links, send us an email and we'd be happy to help you out. info(at)destinationdinners(dot)com. I am not a very experienced cook. Will I still be able to make a Destination Dinner? You will have no problem! How do we know? Because Lisa, the founder, isn't a very good cook either and she can make these kits with delicious results every time. Those are photos of her dishes on the web site. The recipe calls for chicken. Are there recommended substitutes? Recipe kits recommend ingredients that are authentic for the dish. This, however, does not mean that you cannot make substitutions. Dishes that call for chicken can often substitute pork, fish or even tofu. Those recipe kits that call for the addition of vegetables can even forego the meat if you simply add more of the veggies. The Kyoto Recipe Kit is the only kit I would strongly recommend you stick to using fish - but which type fish is completely up to you! Are there any vegetarian recipe kits? Yes. The Haifa Recipe Kit for Falafel is vegetarian. In fact it is vegan. Additionally, the Jeju, Bangkok, Dhaka, New Orleans and Pattaya kits can all be made with no meat or shrimp. Are the Dinner Kits Kosher? Officially, the kits are not kosher and thus do not display the 'K'. Unofficially the Seoul, Kyoto, Dhaka, Beirut, Haifa, Jeju, Jamaica and Bangkok kits contain no non-kosher ingredients; however they are not assembled in a Kosher facility. Unfortunately any traditional Thai curry contains shrimp paste, which is a big kosher "no no". Based on demand, Kosher Kits may be coming soon. Are there any gluten free kits? We are working with an expert in the field to confirm which of our kits we can list as gluten free. Based on our initial review the following kits fall into this listing:
Based on demand, we are looking into offering gluten free versions of the Korean Bulgogi, the Korean Japchae Noodles and the Jamaican Jerk Chicken kits as well. Is there MSG in any of the Recipe Kits? There is MSG in both of the Japanese Kits. The chicken soup packets for the New Orleans Jambalaya Kits do not contain MSG. We are happy to provide full details of ingredients for these or any items. Do the kits need to be refrigerated? Destination Dinners Recipe Kits do not need to be refrigerated, however they should be stored in a cool dry place. The Kyoto kit, which contains White Miso need to remain below 90 degrees. As a result Destination Dinners may refuse to ship the kit to hot locations during the summer months without pre-approval from you. How long do I have to enjoy the kit? We recommend that you enjoy your kit within 90 days of receipt. If stored correctly, the ingredients in the kits will last up to two years, although the flavor will fade over time. I have food allergies. How can I be sure that the sauces and condiments have none of the things I am allergic to? Please don't guess about allergies!!! We do not make any of the ingredients here, but we handle peanuts, cashews, dried shrimp, flour and other glutens in our assembly plant.
